Balustrade

A rail system which includes handrail, newels, and balusters.

Stair Stringer

A stair stringer or stringer board is the housing on either side of a flight of stairs into which the trends and risers are fixed. A staircase will have two stringers, one on either side of the steps.

Treads

A stair tread is a horizontal portion of a set of stairs on which a person walks.

Risers

A stair riser is the near-vertical element in a set of stairs. The piece directly above the tread.

Newel Post

A newel post is the central supporting pillar of a staircase.

Level Rail

Railing used on a balcony or railing.

Rake Rail

Ascending handrail of a balustrade that follows the pitch or rise of stair.
